Writing Assessments

Checklists help clarify the trajectory we are setting for our student writers and can be used as a tool to enlist our parents as allies in our efforts to improve student writing.

Teachers have from students in their class. For each grade, there are two exemplar pieces that represent very different but equivalent ways for a piece to be at-level. This allows the tool to be used for Measures of Students Learning in high-stakes contexts.

There are also rubrics available and detailed ways to arrive at specific numbers that represent what the writer can do. This was very helpful for me. Write this in a way that shows what you know how to do. Then look across the two pieces and not only look to see what each student has learned to do during the unit but also use the pieces as your own self-reflection tools.

Trade Book Packs recommended optional purchase Across each unit, trade books are used to model effective writing techniques, encourage students to read as writers, and provide background knowledge. It can be easy to get into a groove when you are grading and miss something important.

Scoring the assessments is taking the teachers a lot of time. I think you can see by the photos below it's been a busy and productive assessment cycle.
